Arsenal failed to break down a stubborn AC Milan as they had to settle for a goalless draw in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Milan’s Paolo Maldini had a header palmed away by keeper Jens Lehmann early on in a tight first-half. Arsenal stepped up the pressure after the break and Emmanuel Eboue spurned a chance by dragging a shot wide.

Emmanuel Adebayor had a great chance in injury-time but headed against the crossbar from point-blank range. Arsenal had been aware of the task facing them ahead of the tie and they suffered a double setback early on.

Milan’s teenage prodigy Alexandre Pato flicked a ball over Fabregas and struck a sweet volley which was blocked by Kolo Toure.
