Van Persie powered in a spot-kick after Charles N’Zogbia handled an Emmanuel Adebayor cross as Arsenal overwhelmed a depleted Newcastle.

Michael Owen shot wide for the Magpies but a Emmanuel Eboue’s clever backheel let Van Persie to slide in and score.

A Nicky Butt header hit the Arsenal woodwork but Denilson added the home side’s third after an intricate move.

Arsenal were clearly out to prove a point and back up boss Arsene Wenger’s claim that, despite their youth and lack of experience, they have the qualities to be successful.

They burst out of the blocks and could have had a penalty after just two minutes when Van Persie ran on to a Cesc Fabregas pass only to be brought down by Fabricio Coloccini.
