The South African latched on to Mikel Arteta’s quick free-kick and his shot cannoned off Vedran Corluka’s shin and home with Heurelho Gomes stranded.

It was no more than they deserved at that point, after Gomes had denied Louis Saha and Pienaar well earlier on.

Spurs responded, but Tim Howard denied Roman Pavlyuchenko to seal the win.

Everton might also consider themselves fortunate referee Steve Bennett waved away claims for a Spurs penalty when David Bentley’s free-kick struck a hand in the wall late on, but replays were inconclusive and so no penalty was probably the right decision.

It was a classic away win for the Toffees, the visitors dominating proceedings for the first hour before dropping deep late in the game to repel Spurs’ expected rally.

It moves Moyes’s side up to seventh and ensures their push for European football remains firmly on track despite last week’s defeat to Wigan.
