An astonishing result from a United team fielding only one genuine defender (Evra), with nine defenders out through injury, and having only one senior striker available!
In the event, Utd went with 3 at the back, with Nani and especially Park dropping back from Wing-back to Fullback when necessary. I guess playing the excellent but diminutive Evra at Centre back against a giant in Dzecko was considered to be a bit too much…
Owen took all 3 of his goals well, showing a lively bit of pace still for the 3rd – which came seconds after Wolfsburg came within inches of equalising.
Had they done so, at that point a draw would have seen them through!
Dzecko’s goal will add to the speculation that Utd will fight Milan for his signature next summer… but with Owen in this form, do they need him?
We all know Owen desperately wants to be in the England World Cup squad, and this will have done him no harm at all.
Hard luck Wolfies; well done Utd!
