Some Facts

Head-to-head

The sides have never previously met at a major international tournament, and last contested a competitive game 25 years ago, when the Greeks beat Poland 1-0 in a European Championship qualifier in Athens on 29 April 1987.
However, Poland are unbeaten in the six subsequent friendly matches (W4, D2), keeping clean sheets in the last four meetings.

Poland

Franciszek Smuda’s side have lost just once in 12 games, a run lasting virtually a year. Their only defeat in that time was a 2-0 loss to Italy in November 2011.

They have kept clean sheets in their last five games (against Bosnia-Hercegovina, Portugal, Latvia, Slovakia and Andorra) – a Polish record. The last player to score against the Poles was ex-Watford and Ipswich forward Tamas Priskin, who netted for Hungary in a 2-1 defeat in November.

They converted 2.6% of shots into goals at Euro 2008, the worst record at the tournament.

The last host nation to win the European Championship was France in 1984. Both co-hosts lost their opening game in 2008, as did Portugal in 2004 (against Greece).

Greece

Greece have lost only one of 21 games since Fernando Santos took charge in 2010 (a 3-1 friendly loss to Romania in November 2011).

Greece scored fewer goals (14) and collected more cards (27 yellow, one red) than other team that qualified for Euro 2012. Those 14 goals were split between 11 different players.

The Greeks allowed just 19 shots on target in Euro 2012 qualifying – only England and Spain had better records.
