Newcastle 5-1 Stoke Stats and Highlights

Loic Remy scored twice as Newcastle emphatically defeated nine-man Stoke for their seventh win in nine games.

Oussama Assaidi put Stoke ahead but they then had Glenn Whelan sent off for a second yellow, before Marc Wilson saw red for fouling Remy in the area.

Remy’s penalty was saved, but he soon equalised with a deflected finish.

Yoan Gouffran drove in a second, before Remy’s header, Yohan Cabaye’s curled effort and Papiss Cisse’s penalty finished off the comfortable victory.

Head-to-head

Alan PardewStoke have won just once at St James’ Park in all competitions since 1976 – a 2-1 victory in 2010.

Newcastle have won three of their last four matches against Stoke, including a dramatic last-minute 2-1 victory at St James’ Park last March.

Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Cisse have both scored three goals in their last three league appearances against Stoke, while Jon Walters has scored in four of his last five Premier League appearances against Newcastle.

Newcastle

They have lost just one of their last eight league matches (W6, D1, L1).

The Magpies have scored in 14 of their last 15 league games.

It will be a year to the day on Boxing Day that an English player last scored a league goal for Newcastle United (James Perch against Manchester United).

They have lost six of their last seven Premier League matches played on 26 December – although this is only their second home game in the last 12 seasons to be played on Boxing Day.

A win in this fixture would be their 200th victory at home in the Premier League.

Stoke

This is Mark Hughes’ longest unbeaten run as a Premier League manager since March 2011, when he was in charge of Fulham.

The Potters have lost only one of their last 16 league matches in December and are unbeaten in their last 12 since losing 3-0 at Manchester City on 21 December 2011.

Like Newcastle, they have lost just one of their last eight league matches (W3, D4, L1).

This is the third time in six seasons in the Premier League that they have had 21 points after 17 matches. Their lowest tally was 20 points, in 2008-09.
