The two clubs have only met twice before: an FA Cup fourth-round tie in January 1986, which Southampton won 3-0, and Wigan’s 2-0 victory at St Mary’s in August.
That was Southampton’s first home match in the top flight for seven years, but goals from Franco Di Santo and Arouna Kone gave the Latics their first win of the season.
No Premier League side has conceded the first goal of the game on more occasions than Wigan Athletic this season (16).
Wigan have won more points away (11) from home than they have at the DW Stadium (nine) this campaign.
The Latics have managed just one win in their last 11 matches.
Against Manchester United on Wednesday, Southampton lost for the first time in seven Premier League games.
They had 20 shots – which is four more than any other away team has managed at Old Trafford this season and the most since Manchester City’s 6-1 win in October 2011.
The Saints have thrown away a league-high 22 points from winning positions this season.
