For six consecutive years between 2005 and 2010 either one of Chelsea or Manchester United reached the League Cup final. Chelsea won two and lost one, and United won all three.
This is their fourth tie in League Cup history. Manchester United won the first two, but Chelsea prevailed over a two-legged semi-final in January 2005.
Manchester United are unbeaten in their last six games against Chelsea in all competitions (W5 D1) following their 3-2 victory on Sunday.
Robin van Persie enjoys playing at Stamford Bridge – he has scored more goals there (six) than any other visiting player in Premier League history.
Chelsea have failed to reach the quarter-finals in only three of the last 11 years.
This is the seventh time in eight League Cup rounds that Chelsea are facing fellow Premier League clubs.
Liverpool and Aston Villa are the only clubs to have won the League Cup more often than Chelsea, who lifted the trophy in 1965, 1998, 2005 and 2007, and were losing finalists in 1972 and 2008.
Manchester United are aiming to qualify for the quarter-finals for the fifth successive season.
They knocked out Newcastle in the third round, but have not dismissed two Premier League clubs in the same League Cup run, since lifting the trophy for the fourth time in their history in 2010.
The Red Devils were League Cup winners in 1992, 2006, 2009 and 2010 and runners-up in 1983, 1991, 1994 and 2003. Only Liverpool (11) have appeared in the final of this domestic competition more often than United’s eight occasions.
