Everton moved into the Premier League’s top four after Romelu Lukaku’s first goal in six games sealed victory over Southampton.

Seamus Coleman gave Everton the lead with a fine strike into the top corner.

Saints substitute Gaston Ramirez levelled with a shot from range that Everton keeper Joel Robles misjudged.

However, just three minutes later Everton were back in front with Lukaku converting James McCarthy’s incisive pass to seal the victory.

Everton are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League meetings with Southampton (W3, D4).

The Saints have only won one of 14 Premier League trips to Goodison Park (W1, D3, L10), a 2-0 victory in November 1997.


Everton suffered their first home defeat for a year against Sunderland on Boxing Day.

They have not suffered successive league defeats since February, and last lost back-to-back home matches in October 2011.
