Ryan Taylor’s brilliant 20-yard strike put the visitors ahead after three minutes though Wigan had Emerson Boyce harshly sent off an the 55th minute.

Substitute Micheal Owen pounced to stab in for Newcastle with 10 minutes left.

Obafemi Martins then smashed in what looked like being the winner – but Bramble rose highest to head home.

Both teams – who were lying 17th and 18th in the table respectively coming into the match – now retain identical Premier League records of three wins, four draws and six defeats each.

In truth, their was little difference between the two teams throughout as both sets of players struggled to show any real cutting edge – until a thrilling final 10 minutes saw the game explode into life.

Newcastle interim boss again left Owen – not long ago a hugely prolific goalscorer for England – on the bench, while Wigan were evidently handicapped by the absence of first-choice strikers Emile Heskey and Amr Zaki.

Yet the visitors got off to a dream start thanks to a goal of the highest order in the third minute.
