Sunderland’s Matt Kilgallon produced a glaring miss as his side suffered a defeat at Norwich which leaves them only a point above the relegation zone.

Sunderland’s last league triumph at Carrow Road came in a 3-1 win in March 1985, a week before they contested that year’s League Cup final.

Sunderland have won three of the last four meetings in all competitions, but Norwich won this corresponding fixture last season – 2-1 at Carrow Road, when Leon Barnett and Steve Morison scored for the hosts.


Norwich are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League matches – their longest unbeaten run since seven without defeat from January to February 1994.

Chris Hughton’s men have won all three home matches 1-0 during this period, including victories over Arsenal and Manchester United.

The Canaries have scored a league high 45% of their goals from headers.

Norwich have exactly the same amount of points after 14 matches (16) as they did at this stage last season under Paul Lambert’s management.


Martin O’Neill was Norwich City manager from June to November 1995. He won six and lost four of 16 league games – they were sixth in the table when he left.

Sunderland have won just two of 21 league matches dating back to last season.

The Black Cats have registered just 36 shots on target so far this campaign, the fewest in the league. They have failed to score in five games – equal most with QPR, Swansea, Stoke and Aston Villa going into the weekend.

This fixture is being played a year and two days after Steve Bruce was sacked as Sunderland manager after accruing 11 points from 13 games at the start of last season. The Black Cats currently have 13 points from 13 games this term.
