Less than a year ago Manche$ter City were talking of buying Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Drogba et al, and powering their way into the European Champion’s League via a serious assault on the Premiership title… they ended up buying a bunch of overpriced mercenaries with bad attitudes (Tevez, Bellamy, Adebayoor), another couple of overpriced mercenaries who have looked distinctly mediocre (Barry, Lescott); Ronaldo laughed them off (“I would never play for City”), Berbatov refused to even speak with them, their best player wants to go to Barcelona and they have sold their best defender in Richard Dunne – who is doing brilliantly with Aston Villa, riding high above his old club in the table.
Where did it all go wrong?
Impatience and unrealistic short-term aspirations… and that is also why Mark Hughes’ job is looking increasingly insecure…
