Stoke City 0-1 Aston Villa Highlights

Andreas Weimann scored the only goal of the game as Aston Villa started their season with a hard-earned victory over Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.

The Austria striker netted five minutes into the second half with an angled shot which was too powerful for Potters goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Phil Bardsley had Stoke’s best chance in the first half with a curling shot.

Former Barcelona forward Bojan Krkic impressed for the home side but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Head-to-head

Stoke beat Aston Villa home and away last season for the first time since the 1965-66 campaign.

Villa’s only win in their last seven visits to Stoke came in April 2013.

Stoke City

Stoke’s ninth-placed finish last season was their highest in the top flight since 1975. They had never previously finished higher than 11th in the Premier League.

The Potters also earned their most Premier League points (50) last season.

Seven teams took more long throws than Stoke City this season – evidence of their evolution under Mark Hughes.

Only last season’s top five clubs had a better home record than Stoke (W10, D6, L3).

They have earned 19 points out of a possible 24 in their last eight matches at the Britannia Stadium, with their only defeat in that period coming against Tottenham.

Peter Crouch scored and set up a goal in both of Stoke’s victories over his former club Aston Villa last season.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa lost their final six away matches last season, conceding 17 goals and scoring two. They have not lost seven consecutive away matches in the top flight since an eight-match losing streak in 1964.

They are winless in their last nine Premier League away fixtures since beating Sunderland on New Year’s Day.

Villa begin their season with an away match for the fourth successive season. They drew 0-0 at Fulham in 2011, lost 1-0 at West Ham in 2012 and defeated Arsenal 3-1 last year.

Paul Lambert’s side only won one of their last nine league games home or away last season.

Since August 2011, Villa have recorded fewer points (117 in 114 games) than any other ever-present side in that period.
