Avram Grant’s side were gifted the lead when Richard Dunne diverted Nicolas Anelka’s cross into his own net. City responded by creating a succession of good chances and Carlo Cudicini did well to keep out Martin Petrov’s shot. But Salomon Kalou rounded Joe Hart then slotted home to give Chelsea breathing space and only two superb saves by Hart stopped Anelka adding to their tally. It was a vital win for Chelsea and means they maintain the pressure on United, who travel to play Middlesbrough on Sunday. Grant was in charge when Chelsea thumped City 6-0 at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season and the way they began this game suggested they would enjoy another walk in the park.

  • Turning On the Style: From there, Chelsea took control. On 23 minutes, Neto volleyed home after pouncing on a cross following a Caicedo ball recovery and Malo Gusto’s delivery. Soon after, Estêvão found space on the flank, bursting forward to lay on an assist for Enzo Fernández at the back post for Chelsea’s third (34’).
  • Second Half Rout: Chelsea’s set piece threat continued to pay off after the break. Caicedo poked in from close range following a corner in the 54th minute to make it 4-1, and Trevoh Chalobah completed the rout just four minutes later, firing home after Pedro’s header set him up from another corner (58’).
  • West Ham Couldn’t Respond: Despite a few late chances, West Ham failed to add to their tally, with Chelsea goalkeeper Sánchez tipping over a Potts shot and Wilson heading wide.

Summer signing Ben Chilwell scored one and assisted another on his first Premier League start since his £45m move from Leicester City as Chelsea returned to winning ways against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

Having made his first appearance on Tuesday as Frank Lampard’s side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by Tottenham, Chilwell marked his 100th Premier League appearance by firing in at the back post following Mamadou Sakho’s failed clearance.

Chilwell, 23, then delivered an excellent cross from the left to allow Kurt Zouma to head in a second after 66 minutes, before Jorginho stepped up to convert two penalties in the space of four minutes to seal victory.

Tammy Abraham was left aggrieved as, having won the first penalty, he was denied the opportunity to take the second as captain Cesar Azpilicueta shepherded him away from Jorginho.

Manager Lampard also handed a league debut to £22m goalkeeper Edouard Mendy as the hosts, led in defence by fellow summer addition Thiago Silva, registered a first clean sheet of the season as visitors Palace failed to muster a shot on target.

Chelsea climb into the top four before the rest of the weekend’s action, while defeat leaves Crystal Palace in eighth.

Manchester City 4-0 Liverpool Highlights

Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning celebrations were slightly dampened as they were thrashed by deposed champions Manchester City.

Match highlights

Jurgen Klopp’s side ended an agonising 30-year wait for the top-flight title when City lost at Chelsea last week, but were resoundingly hammered on their return to action.

The Reds, who were given a guard of honour by the hosts before kick-off, could have taken the lead at Etihad Stadium but Mohamed Salah’s low drive cannoned off the post.

Man City give Premier League champions Liverpool guard of honour

It proved costly as Pep Guardiola’s men took complete control with a devastating first-half display in which they scored three goals within 20 minutes.

The sublime Kevin de Bruyne converted the opener from the penalty spot after Joe Gomez hauled down Raheem Sterling and the England international finished off a swift counter-attack for the second.

Midfielder Phil Foden further enhanced his reputation as a star in the making, coolly slotting home before half-time following a quick one-two with De Bruyne.

City scored their fourth in the second half when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain inadvertently slid the ball into his own net from Sterling’s low drive.

London Derby

West Ham 3-2 Chelsea Highlights

Andriy Yarmolenko’s last-gasp winner settled an eventful London derby with Chelsea and delivered a huge boost to West Ham United’s hopes of avoiding relegation.

In a topsy-turvy game, which saw West Ham infuriated when Tomas Soucek’s first-half goal was ruled out by VAR, substitute Yarmolenko made the decisive contribution when the finished off a superb counter attack with a classic left-foot finish.

It looked like both sides would have to settle for a point but that late twist not only provides a huge morale lift to David Moyes’ side, putting them three points clear of the relegation places, but also completed a good 24 hours for Manchester United in the race for Champions League places after their win at Brighton and third-placed Leicester City’s loss at Everton.

Moyes was angry when Soucek saw a first-half goal ruled out because Michail Antonio was adjudged to be offside and in Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s line of vision.

Chelsea then took the lead through Willian’s penalty but battling West Ham levelled through Soucek’s header right on the stroke of half-time.

Man-of-the-match Antonio bundled West Ham in front six minutes after the interval but this eventful affair looked to be heading for a draw when Willian’s superb free-kick with 18 minutes left drew Chelsea level.

And yet, with injury-time looming, West Ham broke and the tireless Antonio set up Yarmolenko for a crisp finish that gave Moyes’ men what could be a priceless three points.

Manchester United 3-0 Sheffield United

Man Utd 3-0 Sheffield Highlights

Anthony Martial scored Manchester United’s first Premier League hat-trick in more than seven years as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men eased past Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

Robin van Persie was the last United player to score a treble in the league.

And while there was nothing to compare with the Dutchman’s brilliant volley against Aston Villa that helped seal the 13th and final title of Sir Alex Ferguson’s illustrious reign, Martial did complete his own milestone with a delightful chipped finish over Simon Moore after collecting Marcus Rashford’s return pass.

The result moves United to within two points of fourth-placed Chelsea, who entertain Manchester City on Thursday.

However, for Chris Wilder’s visitors it was another disappointing day. The Blades have now picked up just one point from three games since the resumption and are yet to score.

“I am satisfied with the way we fought back. These games are difficult. It was a tough game with a lot of intensity.

“Tottenham started well. It’s not easy to go down 1-0 but I am pleased with the performance and reaction. Now it’s important to continue the work.

“It’s too early to talk of the title. This league is very tough. Tottenham showed in this league there are six or seven teams that can win the title. It’s important to continue in this way and improve the confidence.”

Chelsea Vs Hull

Hull 0-2 Chelsea Highlights

Chelsea stopped the rot after successive Premier League defeats as they ground down Hull at the KCOM Stadium.

The hosts enjoyed the better of a cagey first half but went behind when Willian swept home a curling shot after good work from Diego Costa after the break.

Costa found the top corner with a similar strike to double the lead after Nemanja Matic’s powerful run.

Hull never recovered and could have been further behind but for Pedro’s poor finishing from six yards.

Leicester City win Premier League

Leicester City have won the Premier League title after Tottenham failed to beat Chelsea on Monday night.

Leicester started the campaign as 5,000-1 outsiders for the title after almost being relegated last season.

After Leicester drew 1-1 at Manchester United on Sunday, Tottenham needed to win all three of their remaining league games to catch the Foxes.

The Foxes become the first club since Nottingham Forest in 1977-78 to win the English top-flight league title for the first time, having only once before — in 1928-29 — finished as runners-up in their 132-year history.
