Stars from the world of football have backed Barcelona’s Dani Alves after he reacted to having a banana thrown at him by peeling it and taking a bite.

The racist taunt occurred as Alves was about to take a corner during Sunday’s dramatic 3-2 win at Villarreal.

Oscar, Luis and Willian — Chelsea’s Brazilian trio Oscar, David Luiz and Willian demonstrated their solidarity with compatriot Alves by posting a picture of them with a banana on Instagram.

Emmanuel Adebayor said on Twitter: “Massive respect to danid2ois, there is no place for Racism in Football.

What @DaniAlvesD2 tolerated last night is an outrage. We must fight all forms of discrimination united. Will be zero tolerance at #WorldCup. Fifa president Sepp Blatter said on Twitter.

Arsenal kept themselves in contention for the Premier League title as Tomas Rosicky’s early goal secured victory at north London rivals Tottenham.

Rosicky rifled in a sublime angled drive just minutes into the game after leading a swift break for the visitors.

Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor flicked a shot wide in the first half, and they dominated after the break.

Nacer Chadli’s low shot was blocked on the line and Adebayor headed narrowly off target, but Arsenal held on.

The win means Arsenal are third in the standings but crucially now just four points off leaders Chelsea, who lost 1-0 to Aston Villa on Saturday, and with a game in hand.

Tottenham edged above Arsenal at the top of the Premier League despite being held to a home draw by Chelsea.

Gylfi Sigurdsson gave Spurs a first-half lead with a low finish after superb build-up play involving Christian Eriksen and Roberto Soldado.

Chelsea introduced Juan Mata at half-time and the move paid off as his free-kick was headed in by John Terry.

The Blues had Fernando Torres sent off for a second yellow card but claimed a point to move up to third in the table.

Manchester City’s missed the chance to go top of the Premier League following a shock defeat at Aston Villa.
