Scolari named as Chelsea manager

Chelsea have named Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari as their new manager in succession to Avram Grant.
Scolari, who is currently in charge of the Portuguese side at Euro 2008, will take over at Stamford Bridge on 1 July.
“He is one of the world’s top coaches with a record of success at country and club level,” read a Chelsea statement.
Scolari won the 2002 World Cup with Brazil and led Portugal to the final of Euro 2004, and has also won nine domestic trophies in Brazil.
The Brazilian becomes the fourth manager during owner Roman Abramovich’s reign following the departures of Claudio Ranieri, Jose Mourinho and Grant.

The latter only lasted eight months, despite guiding Chelsea to second place in the Premier League and to their first Champions League final last season.
AC Milan manager Carlo Ancelotti, new Manchester City boss Mark Hughes and former Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini had been in the running for the job but the appointment ends weeks of speculation after Grant was sacked towards the end of May.

Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool Highlights

Chelsea and Liverpool fought out a gritty goalless draw at Stamford Bridge which does little for the differing aspirations of either side.

Click Here to Watch Second Half Highlights

The visitors, missing the injured Fernando Torres in attack, had the best of the first-half with Peter Crouch shooting just wide on 18 minutes. Yet Chelsea were unlucky not to be given a first-half penalty when Javier Mascherano skidded into Joe Cole. Liverpool now lie seventh and Chelsea sit five points behind leaders Arsenal. With Manchester City’s shock defeat of Manchester United earlier in the afternoon, this match took on extra importance for both teams – clearly reflected in the early frenetic pace. Liverpool, suffering from poor form and desperate for a win, started brightly with talismanic captain Steven Gerrard roaming menacingly behind Dirk Kuyt and Peter Crouch.

Portsmouth 1-1 Chelsea Highlights

A debut goal from Jermain Defoe helped Portsmouth earn a point against Chelsea in a pulsating game at Fratton Park.

Nicolas Anelka’s hooked volley from Joe Cole’s chest down gave Chelsea the lead after a goalless first half.

Defoe levelled for Pompey just eight minutes later as he raced on to a Milan Baros flick and coolly slotted the ball past Petr Cech.

Noe Pamarot hit the post for the home side as Chelsea were denied a 10th successive victory.

Defoe replaced Benjani in Pompey’s attack with the Zimbabwean striker’s future still unresolved amid his on-off deadline-day move to Manchester City.

Portsmouth more than held their own against their visitors in the opening half with the impressive Lassana Diarra pulling the strings in midfield against his former club.

Neither side could gain the upper hand and both sets of players restricted to shots from distance, with Michael Ballack and Florent Malouda shooting well wide for Chelsea and Baros and Niko Kranjcar for the hosts.
